[THEME SONG BEGINS]

>> RACHEL: Welcome back, it's time for more Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show.

Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 brush!

>> RACHEL: It’s Musicians Week, and tonight we've got more of your favorite game What’s that sound!

[WHATS THAT SOUND THEME]

>> RACHEL: Tonight we’ll play you a sound, and you have to guess what INSTRUMENT the musician is playing to make each song!

Here’s your first sound:

[SITAR MUSIC PLAYS]

>> RACHEL: So, what instrument is this musician play? What’s that sound?

Find out after you switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth,

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: and give your tongue a brush too.

That sound is,

>> GROUP: A Sitar.

>> RACHEL: A sitar! A sitar is a string instrument, kind of like a guitar. That means musicians who play this instrument pluck strings in order to make sounds. The sitar is used a lot in India, which is a country in Asia. It’s got a sound that is totally unique, meaning not a lot of things sound like it! Let’s listen again:

[SITAR MUSIC SWELLS, THEN ENDS]

>> RACHEL: Switch to the bottom of your mouth,

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: and brush the molars in the way back.

Ready for your next sound?

[VOCALIST SCAT SINGING]

What instrument is this musician playing? What’s that sound?

>> GROUP: Their voice!

>> RACHEL: Their voice!

Many singers use their own voice as their instrument, and this singer is doing something called scat singing! I’ll tell you all about it, but first-

Switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth...

[SWITCH BELL]

>> RACHEL: -and don't brush too hard.

What you just heard is called Scat Singing. Scat singers will use their voices to sound like other instruments, or to express emotions, without actual words. They use nonsense words, and usually improvise, or make up the sounds on the spot! Anyone can try scat singing, but first, we’ll need to finish brushing our teeth!

[THEME SONG BEGINS]

>> RACHEL: Good thing we’re done with Chompers today -- but you cats come on back tomorrow for more clean teeth.

>> KIDS: 3-2-1 Spit!

[THEME SONG ENDS]

>> RACHEL: Chompers is a production of Gimlet Media.
