[WHAT'S THAT SOUND THEME]

>>RACHEL: We’re going to play a sound that helps people everyday, and you have to guess what it is! Ready for your first one?

[BEEPS IN RHYTHM]

>>RACHEL: Let’s hear that again!

[BEEPS IN RHYTHM]

>>RACHEL: Hmm, what’s that sound?  Shout it out!

[MUSIC BEGINS]

>>Group: An Accessible Pedestrian Signal!

>>RACHEL: An Accessible Pedestrian Signal! Also called APS.

Switch your brushing to the other side of the top of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL: -and don’t forget the molars in the way back.

Accessible Pedestrian Signals are tools that help people (pedestrians) who have trouble seeing know when it’s safe to cross the street. Have you ever heard a crosswalk beep when it’s safe to cross? Or heard a machine say “Wait!”

[CROSSWALK: WAIT!]

>>RACHEL: That’s an Accessible Pedestrian Signal!

[MUSIC ENDS]

>>RACHEL: Switch your brushing to the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL: -and spit if you need to.

Ready for your next sound?

[TAPPING]

>>RACHEL: Hmmm, let’s hear that again! What’s that sound?

[TAPPING]

[MUSIC BEGINS]

>>GROUP: A White Cane!

>>RACHEL: A white cane!

>>KID: Huh?

>>RACHEL: I’ll explain after you switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth…

[SWITCH BELL]

>>RACHEL: -and brush your front teeth too.

A White Cane is a walking stick that some people who have low vision or are blind use to find their way around! People using them sweep the cane across the ground in front of them as they walk! That way the people using them know where to walk, without bumping into curbs or walls.
