>> Rachel: Good morning!

It’s time for Chompers, your morning and night toothbrushing show. Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and brush the inside, outside and chewing side of each tooth.

>>Kids: 3, 2, 1 brush!

>> Rachel: It’s Bugs Week! And today we’ve got some riddles about crawly critters to puzzle your noggin!

Here’s your first one:

This bug has two big CLAWS

And a tail that can hurt

It looks like a small lobster

That you find in the desert

What type of bug is this?

>>Group: A scorpion!

>> Rachel: A scorpion.

Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, but don't brush too hard.

(Switch Bell)

>> Rachel: Scorpions are a type of ARACHNID. That means they have 8 legs, like spiders. Scorpions have two sharp pincers in the front of their body that look sort of like the claws of a lobster or a crab.

(SFX CASTANET)

>> Rachel: And they have a long tail with a stinger at the end. Scorpions use their stingers to inject poison into whatever they want to eat.

Switch to the bottom of your mouth, and keep brushing.

(Switch Bell)

>> Rachel: Here’s your next riddle:

This bug is like a lamp

Lighting up the woods at night

The fly around in darkness

Till their butt turns on the light

>>Group: Fireflies!

>> Rachel: Fireflies, or lightning bugs, are the little bugs that light up the woods at night. Their butts light up like a lightbulb using something called BIOLUMINESCENCE.

>> KID: WHAT?

>> Rachel: I'll explain, after you switch to the other side of the bottom of your mouth, and brush the molars in they way back.

(Switch Bell)

>> Rachel: Bioluminescence is how certain animals create light. Bio means life, and luminescence means “cold light,” like a light that isn't made with fire or heat. Animals who bioluminesce can create light in their bodies using chemical reactions. Fireflies mix special chemicals in their butts to make them light up.

That's it for Chompers today, but come back tonight for more buggy riddles. Until then…

>>Kids: 3, 2, 1 spit!
